I first read Vergil's Aeneid (the Fitzgerald translation) my freshman year of college. I took a Western Civlizations class with one of the most incredible professors of history that I've ever had.
I completely didn't appreciate how incredible the story is and how significant the text really is. It wasn't until I had it taught to me several more times (twice more by that same professor in different classes) that I really began to fall in love with the story.
In particular with the story of Dido and Aeneas in books 4-6.
Dido is truly an incredible character. Even though, she ultimately ends up falling from grace through the handiwork of capricious and petulant gods and goddesses, she is adimirable to the end. She deserved more than the cruel hand of cards that she was dealt.
